A BIT ABOUT EMMA

I freelance from my London base and work all over the UK. Regular jobs include; news and sport for south London papers, photography for NGO's, portraits, events and weddings. My passion is photojournalism so alongside commissioned work I am always shooting my own projects, developing stories about subjects that interest me and are of social concern. I see photography as a powerful tool for social change and this has always inspired me and informed the direction of my work. I have freelanced abroad for humanitarian organisations and worked as a picture editor for Greenpeace International in London. I am now very much focused on stories in the UK and developing a close relationship to my subject and subject matter.

My interest in photography started as a child, when I began using my Dad's 35mm SLR camera to shoot pictures of my family and the international students living at our house. When I was 16 I studied photography at college and fell in love with the medium. I then went on to do a degree at the University of Westminster, where I graduated in 2005. Alongside my studies I worked part-time as a street fundraiser and a strong vision developed to work as a photographer for charities and NGO's. After graduating I moved to Somerset where I worked for the Big Green Gathering and I went from there to a position in the photo department at Greenpeace International in Amsterdam. In 2008/2009 I was based in India for one year, working for NGO's including Greenpeace, Actionaid, Peace Direct and Practical Action. A major theme of interest at this time was women's issues and I spent time in a shelter on the border to India and Nepal recording pictures and stories of women seeking refuge for domestic violence, rape and trafficking. I also worked on climate change stories and helped to establish a photo-department at the Greenpeace India office in Bangalore. On my return from India (2009-2010) I took a part-time picture editor position assisting the Greenpeace Head of Photography on the International picture desk. Whilst working here I divided my time between picture editing duties, shooting my own projects and other commissioned work.

I work mainly in stills but have a strong interest in film and exploring the boundaries of both mediums. My major project at university was a 20 minute documentary called 'Alignments' shot in stills on a 35mm camera. The film was screened at the Rio Cinema in 2006 and received good reviews as part of the programme of short films. More recently I finished a documentary called 'Peace-camp' about the relationship between activists and the homeless community at Democracy Village, Parliament Square. These films can be viewed in the multimedia section of my site.
