Sit-down Peace Protest

2nd July 2010. Simon and Anita with others gathered in the street for a sit down protest in the name of peace. They are calling for an end to the war in Afghanistan and to send the troops home. Today was Democracy village's date of eviction given by the high court. Residents have been told that the date has been extended due to an appeal by two defendents. A new date of the 19th July has been given.

Dean at Democracy Village

28th June 2010. Activist Dean Puckett is a member of the Kew Bridge Eco Village movement who were part of the founding group of Democracy Village, a peace camp set up on Parliament Square on the 1st May 2010. Activists have taken over the square to protest on a number of issues ranging from "Peace, an end to the war in Afghanistan, climate justice, civil liberties, land reform, electoral reform and much more."

Alcohol at Democracy Village

Tracey (left) and another resident who were both living on the streets before coming to democracy village. Both women have drug / alcohol related problems. Activists are now outnumbered by homeless people which amounts to about 80% of the residents here. Initially the site was aimed to be alcohol free but now alcoholics and drug addicts make up the majority of people living here.

Josh at Democracy Village

Josh, 16, is a resident at Democracy village, says that people are tired and the camp is lacking spirit as it has been a struggle dealing with the living situation and the influx of homeless people with drug and alcohol problems. Activists are now outnumbered by homeless people which amounts to about 80% of the residents here. Initially the site was aimed to be alcohol free but now alcoholics and drug addicts make up the majority of people living here.

Josh outside the Royal Courts of Justice

Josh, a resident of Democracy village, protests outside the Royal Courts of Justice where activists are appearing for the final date of the hearing Boris Johnson vs Democracy Village. He is now finding life on Parliament Square tough as activists are now outnumbered by homeless people which amounts to about 80% of the residents here. Initially the site was aimed to be alcohol free but now alcoholics and drug addicts make up the majority of people living here.

Chris Knight, one of 15 defendents in the Democracy village case, is arrested along with other activists. Today was Democracy village's date of eviction given by the high court. Residents have been told that the date has been extended due to an appeal by two defendents. A new date of the 19th July has been given.

Activist Simon Moore is outside his tent, pitched at Democracy Village. He sits beside a banner that he is painting which reads "Don't trade your beliefs for a quiet life. Only by your own hand will your dreams be realized". Simon is here to promote "Non-violent civil disobedience and asking for peace, justice, freedom and truth".

Dean and Gareth take down banners

Dean and Gareth, part of the founding group of Democracy village who came from Kew Bridge Eco village, take down banners at the camp. Both are exhausted and ready to leave after 8 weeks of activism and holding the space here which has been over-run with homeless people. Activists are now outnumbered by homeless people which amounts to about 80% of the residents here. Initially the site was aimed to be alcohol free but now alcoholics and drug addicts make up the majority of people living here.
